The new Tiffany & Co. Scholarships can be used for any of GIA’s education programmes. “We did not put any restrictions on these awards so they would be available to as many students as possible,” said Mike Kowalski, president and CEO of Tiffany & Co.

Murphy Medical Center Foundation has awarded 22 scholarships totaling $38,500 to area students pursuing higher education in the healthcare arena.

Seven scholarships are awarded each year to graduating high school students from schools in Cherokee, Clay and Graham counties.
“The Foundation’s Board of Directors is extremely impressed with the high caliber of students receiving these scholarships,” said Kathi Osborne, Foundation Director at the hospital.  “We have strong confidence in their ability to complete their healthcare-related studies and become valuable contributors of care.”
Each student received a scholarship of $1,750.

This year’s high school student recipients were Crystal Green of Hayesville, Lauren Griggs of Robbinsville, Whitney Laney of Murphy, Samuel Lusty of Hayesville, Erin Rollins of Murphy, Shauna Kristen Sneed of Murphy, and Mary Katlyn Williams of Andrews.

“Receiving this scholarship is an honor and will help me out greatly financially,” said Sam Lusty, a graduating senior from Hayesville High School.  “I will be participating in WCU’s Track and Field program and finding a job during college will be difficult with the athletic requirements and being a member of the Honors College at WCU.  My plans are to become a medical doctor and return to Western North Carolina to practice one day.”

“From Physical Therapy to Nurse Anesthetists to Medical Doctors, we’re helping students gain skills they can bring home and employ to the benefit of our community,” said Osborne.

The scholarships are granted in the names of three valued community members:  Dr. Helen Wells, Mr. John Carringer, and Ms. Dorothy Cloer.

Murphy Medical Center Foundation has an endowment of $1.4 million, proceeds from which are used, in part, to fund the annual healthcare education scholarships.  Donations to the Foundation also help the hospital fund ongoing improvements and ensure the future stability of the hospital.  Cash, bequests, stocks, or in-kind donations are accepted. To discuss making a tax-deductible gift to Murphy Medical Center, contact Osborne at 835-7506.
Samuel Lusty of Hayesville was awarded the Dr. Helen Wells Healthcare Education Scholarship and will pursue a career in Psychiatry, beginning at Western Carolina University.
