Scholarship in Wireless Multimedia Communications , UnitedKingdom

Fully Funded Scholarship in Wireless Multimedia Communications
Kingston University – Mobile Information and Network Technologies Research Centre (MINT)

An Industrial Scholarship offers a £16,000 per annum stipend (for a maximum of three years for a PhD degree). In addition, tuition fees will be covered as well as funding for equipment, conference trips and training. (An overseas candidate may be required to meet the difference between EU and Overseas tuition fees.)

Candidates must hold at least a UK upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electronic Engineering or any relevant discipline, and programming experience, preferably in C++ and/or Matlab. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Maria Martini at the earliest opportunity to check eligibility requirements and discuss the research programme. Where appropriate, interviews will be conducted at the soonest mutually convenient date.

How to efficiently serve multimedia streaming sessions over a multiple access wireless channel with shared communications resources is still a critical problem in wireless video transmission.

The problem can be tackled at different layers of the protocol stack and cross-layer design solutions should be investigated in order to optimize the global system. A possible approach for video rate adaptation is layered video coding, also called scalable video coding. This method provides a base layer coded at a lower rate and one or more enhancement layers. The base layer can be decoded independently, and enhancement layers can only be decoded if the base layer is decoded successfully. Rate adaptation is achieved in this case by changing the number of enhancement layers transmitted.
Such a cross-layer approach will allow a better utilization of the resources in a situation where many users have to be served with a required QoS. Application to LTE systems will be addressed.
By also exploiting scalable video coding, the project will aim at a quality-driven content-aware scheme for multimedia transmission to multiple users, by considering content-aware MAC layer resource allocation and scheduling. The possibility to also control application layer parameters according to multi-layer information for downlink video transmission to multiple users will be considered.
You are encouraged to discuss this project with Dr M.G. Martini, the Director of Studies before applying. Please return the completed Postgraduate Application Form together with an academic CV, TWO references, academic certificates and any other documentation to:

Degree in Renewable Energy Science Scholarships, Iceland

RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland is now accepting applications for its one year (90 ECTS credits) international M.Sc. Degree Program in Renewable Energy Science, for the academic year 2011-2012.

RES is a private institution of higher learning, a graduate school, affiliated with the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and the University of Akureyri in North-Iceland.
RES is seeking limited number of highly qualified students to enroll in the M.Sc. Degree Program. A number of Scholarship Awards are also available for outstanding students, including e8 Scholarships and RES tuition fee waiver.

The RES Program will in February 2011 complete its third year of operation when 49 masters degree students from twelve different countries will graduate. The students this year are specializing in four different fields, namely Geothermal Energy, Hydropower, Fuel Cell Systems & Hydrogen, and Energy Systems & Policies. RES also offers a specialization in Biofuels & Bioenergy. In the near future the school will as well offer specializations in Wind & Wave Power and in Solar Energy in cooperation with foreign partner universities.

RES would appreciate if you could kindly discuss our M.Sc. Degree Program details and scholarship opportunities with some of your top students interested in pursuing a degree in renewable energy in Iceland. Currently 81% of primary energy in Iceland comes from renewable energy sources, highest of any nation. Essentially 100% of electricity generation in Iceland is already from renewable energy sources and over 99% of space heating. Therefore Iceland is a good example for other nations to follow on their route to a more sustainable energy future.
RES is also looking to further expand co-operation with leading international universities, as academic and research partners for the M.Sc. Degree Program, but equally so for the RES Summer School, RES Executive School, and as new partners for our RESnet Network (for more information visit: www.res.is ). If your university is interested in establishing such a partnership with us (e.g., initially with a MOU) we would like to hear from you.

Please feel free to contact the Rectors Office for further information, or visit our RES homepage.

studentship and fellowship in primary health care

STUDENTSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE.  Applications are invited for these 3 or 4 year awards from individuals with a strong academic record who wish to develop a career in primary care research.

.As the eight Universities do not always offer mentorship in every discipline relevant to primary care, it is possible to apply for a “linked” award so that applicants can benefit from training within the School but maintain a link with a University outside the School that can provide discipline-specific mentoring.

Awards are offered at all eight Universities within the NIHR School of Primary Care Research: Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Keele, London (University College), Manchester, Oxford, and Southampton. Details of the specific research training opportunities available at each University are listed below

Awards will normally be taken up in October 2010.

Fellowships

Applicants for Fellowships must have experience of research in primary care or a closely related field of medicine. A doctoral degree is desirable but applicants who have not had the opportunity to undertake doctoral training will be considered if they have substantial relevant experience.

Remuneration for Fellowships will depend on previous experience but most appointees will receive a salary of £25000-£35000 per annum. Appointments are usually for 3 or 4 years duration with the expectation that appointees will then be in a position to apply for more senior academic posts (e.g. lectureships).
Fellowship awards will not in general be based around a specified single project but will involve attachment to a research group involved in a programme of research. The ongoing research programmes in the participating Universities are listed below. The awards are open to all disciplines relevant to primary care research, clinical non-medical and non-clinical, although the individual Universities vary in the disciplinary opportunities they offer.

Studentships

Applicants for Studentships must have a first degree in a discipline relevant to primary care research and will be expected to complete a PhD/DPhil during the award period.

The precise academic qualifications required depend on the University and training offered.

Studentship awards include fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £18000.

HOW TO MAKE AN APPLICATION

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the University at which they would like to hold the award to discuss their application before submitting a formal application. Contact details for each University (and in some cases for each subject area offered) are given below.

Formal applications should be made electronically by submitting a CV (of not more than six A4 pages) and a covering letter (of not more than two A4 pages). The covering letter must: 1) explain why you want to train in primary care research; 2) state clearly the award for which you wish to apply; 3) if more than one University offers the training you would like, list your preference for attachment to individual Universities.
The application should be sent by email with a copy to the relevant contact person at your first choice University. Please state NSPCR Studentship or NSPCR Fellowship as appropriate as the subject of the email. Formal applications must be received by midnight on 21st May 2010.
